Marmottan Monet Museum

The Marmottan Monet Museum, housed in a 19th-century hôtel particulier in Paris's 16th arrondissement, holds the world's largest collection of works by Claude Monet, with more than a hundred paintings including 'Impression, Sunrise' (1872), the painting that gave Impressionism its name, and a unique series of late Water Lilies. It also holds the largest public collection of works by Berthe Morisot, with more than twenty-five paintings, as well as works by Renoir, Degas, Sisley, Pissarro and Caillebotte. It also displays a collection of medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts donated by Daniel Wildenstein, and a collection of First Empire art and furniture assembled by Paul Marmottan. The museum holds two or three temporary exhibitions a year, included in the admission price. Visitors can walk through the first-floor rooms devoted to Morisot and the Impressionists, and the underground room housing Monet's large-format works. The visit lasts between an hour and a half and two hours. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with a late opening on Thursdays until 21:00, and is closed on Mondays and public holidays. Admission costs €14 (reduced rate €9, free for children under 7). It does not accept the Paris Museum Pass. Photography without flash is permitted in the permanent collections.
