Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, known as the Cathedral of Christ the King, is notable for its circular plan and conical structure supported by 16 boomerang-shaped pillars, crowned by a tower with pinnacles and large stained-glass windows depicting the Trinity. Inside, visitors find a central altar of white Skopje marble, surrounded by concentrically arranged pews and a series of side chapels, some open and some closed, dedicated to figures such as the Virgin, St Joseph and the Blessed Sacrament. The visit takes in works of art such as the bronze crucifix by Elisabeth Frink, the aluminium-rod baldachin above the altar, the Stations of the Cross by Sean Rice, and stained glass by artists such as John Piper, Patrick Reyntiens and Margaret Traherne. In the crypt, built of brick and granite, events such as the Beer Festival are held, adding a further cultural use to this original underground space from Lutyens's design.
