Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Paris

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church on Rue Daru, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, and was the first permanent place of worship for the Russian Orthodox community in France. Its exterior combines the Byzantine Greek-cross form with a semicircular pediment containing a mosaic of Christ blessing, and is distinguished by five bell towers topped with golden onion domes. Inside, the layout is inspired by the Hagia Sophia basilica in Constantinople and is decorated with paintings, gilding and polychromy; an iconostasis separates the altar, reserved for the clergy, from the nave used by the faithful. The walls display murals by D. Sorokine and Feodor Bronnikov depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Sermon on the Mount, Christ's Entry into Jerusalem and the Last Supper. The crypt, or lower church, is home to the Holy Trinity parish, where services are held in French as well as in Church Slavonic. This church was the site of painter Pablo Picasso's wedding to dancer Olga Khokhlova in 1918, and hosted the funerals of figures such as Ivan Turgenev, Feodor Chaliapin, Wassily Kandinsky, George Gurdjieff, Ivan Bunin, Andrei Tarkovsky and Henri Troyat.
