Place Charles de Gaulle

Place Charles de Gaulle, historically known as Place de l'Étoile, is a large Parisian square where twelve avenues converge, including the Champs-Élysées. At its centre stands the Arc de Triomphe, built between 1806 and 1836 on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte. Beneath the arch, since 1921, lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The square has a diameter of 241 metres and an area of around 4.55 hectares, making it the second-largest square in Paris after Place de la Concorde. Access to the arch is via an underground pedestrian passage that avoids the traffic of the twelve avenues. The square is split between the 8th, 16th and 17th arrondissements, and its star-shaped design dates back to 1777. The Charles de Gaulle–Étoile metro and RER station serves the area, with lines 1, 2, 6 and RER A.
