Charles Square, located in Prague's New Town, is one of the largest squares in the world and was founded in 1348 by Charles IV as the main centre of the new town. At the centre of the square is a park created in the 19th century, surrounded by important historic buildings such as the New Town Hall, the Baroque Church of St Ignatius of Loyola and the Church of St John of Nepomuk. The square was the scene of historic events, such as the First Defenestration of Prague in 1419, and formerly housed the Chapel of Corpus Christi, an important medieval pilgrimage site. Today, Charles Square is a key transport hub, crossed by several tram lines and served by the Karlovo náměstí metro station.
