Alexanderplatz
Alexanderplatz is a large public square and transport hub in Berlin's Mitte district, popularly known as Alex. The square itself is home to the World Clock, a permanently rotating metal structure showing the time around the world, and the Fountain of Friendship among Peoples, which retains the socialist character of the 1960s redevelopment. It is also home to the Park Inn Hotel Berlin, the city's tallest building. The square is a transport hub and a common starting point for visiting nearby attractions such as the Berlin TV Tower (Fernsehturm), the Nikolai Quarter and the Rotes Rathaus. Its history spans its origins as a cattle market and Germany's leading wool market to its heyday of nightlife in the 1920s, which inspired Alfred Döblin's novel Berlin Alexanderplatz. During the Second World War it was damaged by bombing and the fighting of the Battle of Berlin.
