Park Inn Berlin

The Park Inn Berlin is the tallest skyscraper in the German capital, with 37 floors and a height of 125 metres, located on Alexanderplatz in the Mitte district. Built between 1967 and 1970 during the redevelopment of the square, when it lay in East Berlin, it was designed by a team led by Roland Korn, Heinz Scharlipp and Hans Erich Bogatzky. It opened as the Hotel Stadt Berlin, part of the East German Interhotel chain, with a panoramic restaurant on the 37th floor and lifts unusually fast for the time. After reunification it was renamed Hotel Forum Berlin and later Park Inn Berlin. It has a public viewing platform on the roof, offering views over the city. At its base is a three-storey shopping centre with shops and direct access to the Galeria Kaufhof department store. The building has been renovated several times, including a full refurbishment of all rooms in 2001 and replacement of the façade between 2005 and 2006. Its future is uncertain under 1990s urban planning, although as of April 2024 a new adjacent skyscraper was under construction with no plans to affect it directly.
