Unter den Linden

Unter den Linden is a Berlin boulevard that runs from Pariser Platz, next to the Brandenburg Gate, eastward for 1.5 km to the castle bridge, with wide carriageways and a central tree-lined promenade of lime trees. Along its route stand the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, known as the Lindenoper, St Hedwig's Cathedral, the Neue Wache, Humboldt University, the Berlin State Library and the German Historical Museum in the former Zeughaus. In the central strip stands the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great, and on Bebelplatz is the equestrian statue of Frederick II of Prussia. The boulevard was mentioned by poets such as Goethe, Schiller and Heine, and gave its name to songs such as the March of the Lime Trees and Untern Linden, untern Linden, whose best-known version was performed by Marlene Dietrich.
