The Komische Oper Berlin is an opera company with its historic home at Behrenstraße 55-57, near Unter den Linden. Founded in 1947 by Walter Felsenstein, it specialises in opera, operetta and musicals performed in German, with a tradition of innovative staging (Regietheater). The building, constructed in 1891-92 by Fellner and Helmer, was rebuilt in 1965/66 and seats 1,270. It was named 'Opera Company of the Year' in 2015 and has premiered works by composers such as Siegfried Matthus and Olga Neuwirth. Since August 2023 the theatre has been under renovation, and productions are staged at alternative venues such as the Schillertheater and a hangar at Tempelhof Airport. Visitors can attend opera, operetta and musical performances, and join guided tours when available.
