Lloyd's Building

The Lloyd's Building, also known as the 'Inside-Out Building', is the home of the Lloyd's of London insurance market and a masterpiece of the radical Bowellism style of architecture. Designed by Richard Rogers and built between 1978 and 1986, the building reverses traditional logic by placing staircases, lifts, ducts and pipes on the outside, freeing up an open interior. Visitors can admire its 60-metre-high central atrium, covered by a glass barrel vault suspended from white tubular trusses, and ride escalators up through the first few floors. On the ground floor are the famous Lutine Bell and the Loss Book, which for 300 years has recorded major losses by hand. The building's twelve panoramic glass lifts were the first of their kind in the United Kingdom. On the 11th floor is the Committee Room (Adam Room), an 18th-century dining room designed by Robert Adam in 1763 and moved piece by piece from the previous building. The building received Grade I listing in 2011, the youngest building to do so, and has won numerous architecture awards.
