Lake Markkleeberg
Lake Markkleeberg is an artificial lake created from a former open-cast coal mine, flooded in 1999 and developed as a tourist area in 2006. On its south-eastern shore is the Kanupark Markkleeberg, the only pumped artificial whitewater canal in Germany. An elegant 800 m paved promenade runs along the north-eastern shore, and since 2012 boat trips have operated with two passenger vessels. A network of paths lets you go around the lake at different levels, including the Unterer Uferweg by the water and the Uferrundweg, a 9.2 km scenic circuit. The 45 m-high Auenhain viewpoint offers the best views. The 160 km Kohle-Dampf-Licht-Seen cycle path runs alongside the lake. On the east side there are beaches of various kinds: a family beach next to the promenade, green coves (Wachau Beach), a sports beach and a dog beach (Auenhain Beach). The west side, including Gezelauer Insel island, is reserved for nature and swimming is not allowed.
