Lake Cospuden

Lake Cospuden is a 5.1 km² artificial lake created on a former open-cast lignite mine, south of Leipzig. Opened to the public in 2000 as part of Expo 2000, it has a landscaped park on its northern shore with an entrance building housing an exhibition on mining history and a bike-hire station, a 1.5 km path to the beach, a Tertiary-period forest with geological artefacts, a children's water park, a beach 1 km long and 70 m wide with play and swimming areas, beach pavilions with catering and changing rooms, a jetty for boat trips, an events stage and a crazy-golf course. On the eastern shore, the Zöbigker Winkel has a water-sports centre (Pier I) offering canoeing, rowing, surfing, sailing, kitesurfing, a diving school and boat hire, a 100 m marina with three jetties and moorings for about 200 boats, harbour houses with restaurants and a terrace, a sauna with lake access, holiday apartments, a nine-hole golf course and a diving trail with submerged attractions such as an underwater forest, a shipwreck and a vending machine. On the southern shore, the Bistumshöhe has a 35 m observation tower (180 steps) on an artificial hill 135 m high, with views of the lake, the Belantis theme park and the towers of Leipzig, as well as an enclosure with bison and sika deer. The lake has two islands with a shipwreck, a postbox on one island, a 10.6 km paved circular path for cyclists and skaters, boat trips with the MS Cospuden and the solar boat Solaria 1, two covered self-propelled rafts with a barbecue, and pedal cars covered with clear canopies for families and people with reduced mobility. Throughout the year various events are held, such as open-air cinema, dragon boat races, lakeside concerts, readings and exhibitions. The lake is linked to Leipzig's waterway network by a lock and a canal, and forms part of the Central German Lake District.
