Fuyou Road Mosque
The Fuyou Road Mosque, also known as the North Mosque, is housed in a three-storey building in traditional Qing-dynasty style in Huangpu District. It covers 1,520 square metres and contains a prayer hall, a reception hall, the imam's quarters, libraries, lecture rooms and bathrooms. Beyond the entrance is a rectangular courtyard (sahn); to the north of the courtyard is the wudu (ablution) area and to the south the prayer hall. On the roof stands the Wangyue Pavilion, and inside there are decorations with various patterns and openwork carvings on the ceiling beams. Founded in 1870 by 31 Muslims who raised funds to buy 400 square metres of land, it was extended and renovated on several occasions (1897, 1905, 1936 and 1979). It was historically the political, religious and cultural centre for Shanghai's Muslims and the birthplace of the city's first modern Islamic school, the Wu Ben Primary School. It now functions as a centre for prayer services and other Muslim activities, and it housed the headquarters of the Shanghai Islamic Board, founded in 1909. It can be reached on foot from Yuyuan Garden metro station.
