Prado Beaches
The Prado Beaches are an artificial coastal park in southern Marseille, created in the late 1970s by Gaston Defferre on 20 hectares reclaimed from the sea using spoil from the construction of the two metro lines. The complex functions as both urban beaches and a venue for major events: in 2008 it hosted the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup under the name "Stade du Prado", with 16 national teams and all the group-stage and knockout matches, marking the first time the tournament was held outside Brazil. It also hosts the Sosh Freestyle Cup, notably at the Marseille Bowl, a famous skatepark, and concerts every June during the Fête de la Musique. In April 2012 it was the venue for a political rally attended by 120,000 people according to the organisers. It is located at coordinates 43°15′20″N 05°22′30″E.
