Royal Monastery of the Incarnation
The Royal Monastery of the Incarnation is a convent of Discalced Augustinian nuns founded by Queen Margaret of Austria in the early 17th century. The building, designed by Fray Alberto de la Madre de Dios and built between 1611 and 1616, has a façade in the Herrerian style that went on to influence others. Inside, redecorated in the 18th century by Ventura Rodríguez, highlights include Francisco Bayeu's frescoes on the vault of the main chapel, the high altarpiece with The Annunciation by Vicente Carducho, and sculptures of St Augustine and St Monica attributed to the style of Gregorio Fernández. The monastery holds an important collection of painting and sculpture, with works by Bernardino Luini, Luca Giordano, Juan van der Hamen, Pedro de Mena, José de Mora and Gregorio Fernández. It also has a reliquary holding numerous relics, among them a vial said by tradition to contain the blood of St Pantaleon, which is said to liquefy every 27 July. A museum run by Patrimonio Nacional has been set up in the old enclosure and can be visited.
