The Shanghai Botanical Garden covers about 80 hectares in Xuhui, southwest of the centre. It is organised into themed gardens (peonies, orchids, magnolias, bamboo, conifers, medicinal plants) and has a large exhibition greenhouse with tropical and desert plants. Its collection of penjing, the Chinese art of miniature landscapes, is among the most important in the country.
