Jardin zoologique de Lyon
The zoo occupies part of the Parc de la Tête d'Or, in Lyon's 6th arrondissement, and dates from 1858, when it was first created as an educational farm. Its best-known area is the Plaine Africaine, a savannah of about three hectares opened in 2006 where zebras, giraffes, antelopes and lions live together, along with other rare species. In 2021 the Asian Forest opened on the site of the old elephant house, with gibbons, civets and Bali starlings in outdoor aviaries. The site holds ISO 14001 environmental certification. As it is part of the park, there is no entrance fee to walk round it, and the whole follows the park's rules: it closes in strong gusts of wind and no entry is allowed in the fifteen minutes before closing. It is reached from the park gates on the bank of the Rhône.
