Antequera Bullring
The Sociedad Constructora de la Plaza de Toros built the bullring between 1847 and 1848 under the direction of Manuel García del Álamo, continued by Rafael Mitjana; it opened on 20 August 1848 with the matadors José Redondo «el Chiclanero» and Juan Pastor «el Barbero». Because of the rush to open, the upper stands were made of wood and stayed that way until the town council bought the building in 1980. In 1983-1984 it was completely rebuilt inside and out: the current main door was opened in the style of the 18th-century Antequera master builders, with a brick façade and whitewashed panels, and the stands were covered with a gabled roof on Tuscan limestone columns. It holds 6,150 spectators and has a ring 56 metres in interior diameter; an unusual feature for a bullring, it includes a chapel that works as a full church. On the upper floor is the Bullfighting Museum, with three rooms of photographic archive, posters, bulls' heads and suits of lights.
