Vallon des Auffes

The Vallon des Auffes is a small traditional fishing harbour set in a cove in Marseille's 7th arrondissement, 2.5 km southwest of the Vieux-Port along the Corniche Kennedy, between Catalans Beach and Malmousque Bay. Around its two banks stand around fifty fishermen's huts and small traditional boats, including some pointu boats, and the day's catch is kept for the local restaurants. The place takes its name from 'auffe' (esparto grass, Stipa tenacissima), a grass used to make ropes, plaits and fishing nets. A reinforced-concrete and stone bridge, built in the 19th century during work on the Corniche, crosses the harbour with three semicircular arches 17 m high and 60 m long in total. In 1927 the Monument to the Dead of the Army of the Orient and Distant Lands was unveiled, a 5-metre bronze statue of a woman with her arms raised to the sky facing the Mediterranean, listed as a historic monument in 2009. The cove has also hosted short-lived but widely covered art installations, such as the mural of Zinedine Zidane created by Adidas between 1998 and 2006 with the caption 'Made in Marseille', and in 2013, to mark the European Capital of Culture, a portrait of an anonymous Marseille woman (Annick Perrot-Bishop) by the artist JR.
