One of the largest industrial buildings in 18th-century Spain, completed in 1770. Thousands of cigar-makers worked here, and it was the setting that inspired Prosper Mérimée's Carmen, the character of his novel and of Bizet's opera. Since the mid-20th century it has housed the rectorate of the University of Seville, and its courtyards can be visited freely.
