Montparnasse Cemetery

Montparnasse Cemetery, in the Paris neighbourhood of the same name, is a vast 19-hectare green space where numerous French and foreign intellectuals, artists, writers and political figures rest, including Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Julio Cortázar, Charles Baudelaire and Jacques Chirac. Visitors walk tree-lined paths among more than a thousand trees of different species and can discover distinctive graves, such as that of Serge Gainsbourg, where various objects are left, or the interactive sculpture CAUSSE, which reacts to the presence of people and birds. The cemetery also holds memorials to victims of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, as well as sections dedicated to religious communities and the graves of Jewish figures such as Alfred Dreyfus. Among its historic features is the Moulin de la Charité, an old windmill still preserved as a relic of the site's original farms.
