Epigraphic Museum of Athens

The Epigraphic Museum of Athens is the largest inscription museum in Greece and the third largest in the world, with a collection of approximately 14,000 pieces, mostly Greek, spanning from the 8th century BC to the early Christian period. It is located in the south wing of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Four of its rooms are open to the public, displaying inscriptions on stone, marble, pottery and clay tablets. Highlights include examples of the earliest Greek inscriptions written in boustrophedon and the oldest surviving inscriptions from the Acropolis, such as statue bases and funerary stelae. The exhibition includes legal texts, honorific inscriptions, religious offerings, theatrical inscriptions, epitaphs, financial inscriptions and letters, as well as some in Latin and Jewish gravestones. The museum was founded in 1885 and has been enriched with pieces from archaeological excavations throughout Greece, mainly from Attica.
