Underground, more than 16 metres deep, lies a network of tuff galleries about 15 kilometres long with more than 26,000 tombs used between the 1st and 5th centuries. The route shows frescoes of Christian and pagan inspiration (the life of the bakers, vines, Noah's Ark, Daniel with the lions, Orpheus among animals), some recovered through laser restoration. It is the only Roman catacomb with an underground basilica, dedicated to Saints Nereus and Achilleus, and it contains human remains.
