Chapelle de la Trinité
The chapel of the former Jesuit Grand Collège was built between 1617 and 1622 to a design by the brother and architect Étienne Martellange, and St Francis de Sales consecrated it in 1622. It is a Baroque church whose interior was enriched during the eighteenth century with marble, trompe-l'oeil and sculpted decoration; in 1754 Jean-Antoine Morand redecorated it with Carrara marble. In 1702 the Jesuits set up Lyon's first observatory above the pediment, largely destroyed during the siege of 1793. Between 11 and 26 January 1802 the Consulta of Lyon met here, presided over by Napoleon, which turned the Cisalpine Republic into the Italian Republic. It was deconsecrated in 1920, was a gymnasium between 1930 and 1937 and has been protected as a historic monument since 1939. It was restored in the late 1990s. Since 2024 it has operated as a venue for Baroque music and unusual repertoires under the La Trinité project. It is on the rue de la Bourse, on the Presqu'île.
