Fukagawa Edo Museum
The Fukagawa Edo Museum is a local history museum in the former Fukagawa district (now part of Kōtō, Tokyo) that houses a full-scale, covered replica of a Tokyo shitamachi neighbourhood as it looked around 1840, towards the end of the Tokugawa period. The reconstruction includes 11 buildings — houses, shops, a theatre, a boathouse, a tavern and a fire tower — built using traditional techniques. Visitors can walk the streets and enter the shops and houses, with the lighting changing over time to reproduce different moments of the day. The museum opened in 1986, six years after the Shitamachi Museum and seven years before the Edo-Tokyo Museum, part of a nationwide trend of building local history museums; the content of all three was designed mainly by Total Media.
