Kiyosumi Garden
Kiyosumi Garden is a traditional Japanese strolling garden in Fukagawa, Tokyo, built between 1878 and 1885 by Iwasaki Yatarō. The garden is centred on a large pond with three islands, one linked by a bridge, and offers stepping-stone paths (isowatari) crossing shallow areas of water, allowing visitors to see carp, turtles and birds. It is known for its collection of stones brought from all over Japan, used to form hills, dry waterfalls and stepping paths. It holds more than 4,000 trees, dominated by Japanese black pines, and offers seasonal colour with azaleas, hydrangeas, irises and Taiwan cherry trees. The grounds contain a monument bearing a haiku by Matsuo Bashō. It was designated a Place of Scenic Beauty of Tokyo in 1979.
