Federal Chancellery
The Federal Chancellery (Bundeskanzleramt) is the seat of the German government in Berlin, located in the Spreebogen. The current building, opened in 2001, was designed by Charlotte Frank and Axel Schultes and built in concrete and glass, covering 12,000 square metres, making it one of the largest government buildings in the world. Its modern architecture and large scale have earned it popular nicknames among Berliners, such as 'Kohllosseum', 'Waschmaschine' or 'Elefantenklo'. Next to the main façade stands the sculpture 'Berlin' by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Public access is limited to one weekend a year, usually in August, during the open house day (Tag der offenen Tür), when admission is free. The building is a visual and political landmark of Berlin, and its history reflects the evolution of the chancellery from the imperial era to the present day.
