Soviet War Memorial (Tiergarten)

The Soviet War Memorial in the Tiergarten is a monument erected in 1945 by the Soviet Union to honour those who fell in the Battle of Berlin. It consists of a curved colonnade topped by a large statue of a Soviet soldier, flanked by two 152 mm ML-20 guns and two T-34 tanks. Behind it is an open-air exhibition with photographs of the memorial's construction and a guide to other Berlin memorials. The monument is built from stone taken from the destroyed Reich Chancellery and stands within landscaped gardens. A Russian inscription beneath the statue reads 'Eternal glory to the heroes...'. The site is also the burial place of more than 2,000 Soviet soldiers, explained by a sign in English, German and Russian. It remains an active site of remembrance, with wreath-laying ceremonies on 8 May, and is visited by veterans and tourists. It stands at the heart of Berlin, on Straße des 17. Juni, with a clear view of the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate.
