Bellevue Palace

Bellevue Palace is a late-18th-century Neoclassical building north of the Tiergarten, on the banks of the Spree and near the Victory Column. It was built between 1785 and 1786 by the architect Michael Philipp Boumann as a summer residence for Prince Friedrich August Ferdinand of Prussia, the younger brother of Frederick the Great, and is regarded as the first Neoclassical building in Germany. The complex consists of a central building with 19 bays and a pediment over four Corinthian pilasters, flanked by two side wings: the Spree Wing and the Ladies' Wing. The palace is surrounded by a park of about 20 hectares, laid out by landscape architects with fan-shaped 'points de vue' towards Charlottenburg, the south-west and the Spree. Inside, the only room to retain its original decoration is the Great Oval Hall on the upper floor, designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans, architect of the Brandenburg Gate. Since 1994 it has been the official residence of the Federal President of Germany, and since January 2006 his main official seat, although without living quarters. The interior is not regularly open to visitors, but the Office of the Federal President offers a 360° virtual tour of the rooms and park as they were before the renovation planned for 2026. Visitors can explore the surroundings of the palace, the park and the walk along the Spree, and take in its historical and institutional role on Berlin's monumental axis.
