Odeon of Lyon (ancient Odeon of Fourvière)
The odeon is the small performance venue among the Roman remains on the hill of Fourvière, in the Saint-Just district, next to the large theatre. It was built in the 2nd century, in the time of the emperor Hadrian, during the works to extend the theatre. With a diameter of about 73 metres against the theatre's 110, it held some 3,000 people, while the theatre could hold 10,000; together they provide almost 13,000 seats. It was excavated between 1941 and 1958 within an archaeological reserve of about three hectares, now part of Lugdunum, Roman museums and theatres. The site is at 17 rue Cléberg and can be reached by the Saint-Just funicular (Minimes stop). The semicircular tiers of seating look out over the city, and the area is partly closed in May and June because of the set-up for the Nuits de Fourvière festival.
