Saxon Museum of Psychiatry
The Saxon Museum of Psychiatry is a small museum in Leipzig devoted to the history of asylums and psychiatry, run by the Durchblick association, an initiative of people affected by psychiatry. Founded in 2000, the museum presents special exhibitions on individual fates, careers and institutions. Topics covered include the life stories of court president Daniel Paul Schreber and Saxon dialect poet Lene Voigt, as well as the biographies and therapeutic concepts of doctors and psychiatrists such as Christian August Fürchtegott Hayner and Hermann Paul Nitsche. It also covers the development of psychiatric institutions in Saxony from the Middle Ages, with St Georg Hospital, through to sanatoriums and nursing homes such as Sonnenstein Castle, the private institution at Thonberg and the Dösen sanatorium. The museum presents the history of psychiatry from the perspective of those affected. It is open Wednesday to Saturday from 1pm to 6pm at Mainzer Str. 7, 04109 Leipzig.
