The Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Marseille, founded in 1819, occupies the right wing of the Palais Longchamp, a historic building designed by Henri-Jacques Espérandieu. Its collections include 83,000 zoological specimens, 200,000 botanical specimens, 81,000 fossils and 8,000 minerals. The permanent galleries are the Salle safari, focused on wildlife that arrived by accident through the port; the Salle de Provence, dedicated to regional fauna and flora; the Salle d'ostéologie, on comparative anatomy; and the Salle de préhistoire, on evolution. Notable pieces include Delcourt's giant gecko (Hoplodactylus delcourti), the tigress Impéria (Panthera tigris), a giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), a mosasaur skeleton and the skull of a hydrocephalic man. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, lectures, flash tours and activities, and offers free nature outings. Admission to the permanent collections is free.
