Church of Santa Catalina
Parish church in the centre of Seville, on Alhóndiga street, built on a former mosque. The original construction dates from the 13th century and it was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1356, which explains its mix of Gothic and Mudéjar styles. It keeps a Mudéjar tower with reused ashlar blocks at its base and a 14th-century Gothic portal, from the now-vanished church of Santa Lucía, installed here during the 1923-1930 restoration directed by Juan Talavera y Heredia. Inside, which has three naves with a Mudéjar coffered ceiling, the Baroque high altarpiece (1624-1629) by Diego López Bueno stands out, with the titular image of Saint Catherine, as does the sacramental chapel that Leonardo de Figueroa built in 1721. It also holds the Cristo de la Exaltación, carved by Pedro Roldán in 1687, and a canvas of the Cristo del Perdón attributed to Pedro de Campaña (1560). Closed for works for fourteen years, it reopened to the public in November 2018.
