Church of Sancti Spiritus

CultureVisit: ~30 minFree

The church of Sancti Spiritus is the only vestige of the former monastery of the Order of Santiago. Its south façade has a 16th-century Renaissance doorway, the work of Martín de Santiago and Pedro de Ibarra, decorated with grotesques, medallions of Saint Peter and Saint James, and friezes illustrating Petrarch's triumphs. Inside, with a single nave with niche chapels and rib vaults, the lower choir with a Mudéjar coffered ceiling, the upper choir with a balustrade and Plateresque decoration, and the octagonal main chapel stand out. The Cristo de los Milagros, from the 14th century, and the tombs of the founders, Martín Alfonso de León and María Méndez de Sousa, are also preserved.
