The Plaza Mayor of Salamanca is a large Baroque square built between 1729 and 1756, presided over by the Town Hall and surrounded by arcades with 88 semicircular arches decorated with medallions representing kings, saints, scholars and explorers. It is the nerve centre of the city, a meeting place for locals and visitors alike, with numerous bars, restaurants and terraces under the arcades, among them the historic Café Novelty, founded in 1905. Its grey and pink granite paving and its night lighting make it an emblematic space for strolling, having a drink or simply admiring the architecture. Declared a National Monument in 1935 and part of the World Heritage Site since 1988, the square hosts cultural and festive events throughout the year, and is the ideal starting point for exploring the old town of Salamanca.
