Port of Alicante
The port occupies Alicante's waterfront, facing Paseo de Canalejas and the Explanada de España, and combines commercial, fishing and leisure activity with a recreation and promenade area open to the city. Walking along its quays gives one of the most recognisable views of Alicante, with Santa Bárbara Castle presiding over the bay, especially when lit up at night. Its history is long: it was a public Mediterranean port from 1271, enjoyed a commercial boom with the American trade in the late 18th century and was the setting for the end of the Civil War, with the last refugee ship, the Stanbrook. Today it hosts cruise calls, connections to the island of Tabarca and a cultural programme commemorating its 125th anniversary, with exhibitions and talks on its history and its productive role.
