St. Ignatius Cathedral
St. Ignatius Cathedral, also known as Xujiahui Cathedral, is a Neo-Gothic Catholic church in Xuhui District, Shanghai. Designed by the English architect William Doyle and built by French Jesuits between 1905 and 1910, it can hold 2,500 worshippers. Inside, notable features include the stained-glass windows renewed from 2002 by the artist Wo Ye and Father Thomas Lucas, which incorporate Chinese characters and iconography, as well as the image of Our Lady, Empress of China, by the Spanish sculptor Antonio Jesús Yuste Navarro, enthroned in 2014. The church has been the seat of the Diocese of Shanghai since 1960 and draws more than 2,000 worshippers every Sunday. Its history includes damage during the Cultural Revolution, when it served as a grain store, and its reopening in 1978. It is close to Xujiahui metro station (lines 1 and 9).
