Tianzifang
Tianzifang is a maze of narrow lanes in Shanghai's former French Concession, developed from a 1933 shikumen residential complex called Zhicheng Fang. Along its alleys, visitors find more than 200 small businesses: craft shops, cafés, art studios, galleries, design houses, bars, restaurants and French bistros. The area retains an authentic residential character, with overhead electrical wires and visible air conditioners on the façades, unlike other developments such as Xintiandi. The historic entrance through Alley 248 required walking about 50 metres through residents' everyday life — bicycles, laundry hanging out — before reaching the shopping area. The site is near Dapuqiao station on metro line 9 and the SML shopping centre.
