Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a concrete barrier that divided the city from 1961 to 1989. Today most of the wall has disappeared, but numerous memorial sites survive across the urban landscape. The Berlin Wall Foundation has documented a network of sites including memorials, artworks, information panels and open-air exhibitions. These places let visitors learn about the history of the division, its victims and the context of the Cold War. The East Side Gallery, for example, is a stretch of the wall turned into an open-air art gallery. There are also commemorative markers, monuments and museums such as the Stasi Museum and the Allied Museum. Visiting these sites offers an educational and reflective experience of a crucial chapter in European history.
