Cinema Batalha (Batalha Centro de Cinema)
The Cinema Batalha is at number 47 Praça da Batalha, next to the Church of Santo Ildefonso. The current building was designed by Artur Andrade in the 1940s. It closed in 2000, was refurbished and reopened in December 2022 as a cinema centre. It was classified as a monument of public interest in 2012. It has two screens, Screen 1 with 301 seats and Screen 2 with 110, as well as a library, a film archive and a room for arthouse cinema and moving-image installations. Its best-known feature is the two frescoes by Júlio Pomar on the St John festivities of Porto, in the foyer of the first two floors and in the atrium of the upper floor; the Estado Novo regime kept them covered and they were known only from black-and-white photographs until the 2022 restoration. The facade also includes reliefs by Pomar.
