Tailors' Chapel
The Capela dos Alfaiates, or Chapel of Our Lady of August, stands between Rua do Sol and Rua de São Luís, next to the cathedral hill. Its patron saints, St Bom Homem and Our Lady of August, were venerated in the early 16th century in a house near the Sé. In 1554 work began on a new chapel opposite the cathedral facade; eleven years later only the walls were built and the stonemason Manuel Luís took charge of finishing it. It was declared a national monument in 1927 and in 1935 the city council expropriated it because of the demolitions at the Terreiro da Sé; it was rebuilt on its present site in 1953. The portal has two fluted Corinthian columns and, above, a niche with Flemish-style decoration holding a clay image of Our Lady of August. The interior has a late Gothic rib vault and a Mannerist altarpiece of eight panels on the life of the Virgin, attributed to Francisco Correia.
