Sintra National Palace
The Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila, is a town palace with a complex V-shaped plan, stepped volumes and many hipped roofs. Its silhouette is unmistakable thanks to the two large conical twin chimneys rising above the kitchens. Inside, the rooms are arranged around courtyards, and the highlights include the Sala dos Brasões, with a magnificent coffered ceiling decorated with the coats of arms of 72 Portuguese noble families and the eight sons of King Manuel I; the Sala dos Cisnes, whose ceiling is painted with 30 swans; the Sala das Pegas, with magpies holding the motto "por bem"; and the Sala dos Árabes, with a Moorish-style fountain. The royal chapel, possibly 14th-century, keeps a wooden ceiling with geometric Mudéjar patterns and walls painted to imitate tiles. The kitchens impress with their size and with the conical chimneys rising above the hearths. Along the visit you can see Andalusian and Sevillian tiles, painted ceilings and a mixture of Gothic, Manueline, Mudéjar and Renaissance styles that reflects the successive building and decoration campaigns promoted by the Portuguese monarchy.
