Quinta da Regaleira
The Quinta da Regaleira is an estate of gardens and buildings a stone's throw from Sintra's historic centre, linked to the name of António Carvalho Monteiro, for whom the Italian architect Luigi Manini designed the palace and the whole complex. The visit includes the gardens, the main floor of the palace, the chapel and the Initiation Well, a great tower dug into the earth with a spiral staircase leading down. Underground passages run from the well and connect with the Oriental Grotto, so part of the visit takes place underground. Carvalho Monteiro bought the estate in 1892 and the works, in Neo-Manueline style, were carried out between 1904 and 1910. Since 1997 it has been owned by Sintra Town Council. Visits are by timed ticket, and the palace and chapel close half an hour before the gardens.
