Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz
The Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz is a theatre in Berlin located on the Kurfürstendamm, in the Charlottenburg district. It occupies the former Universum cinema, built in the 1920s by Erich Mendelsohn in a rationalist style and considered possibly the world's first modernist cinema. Since 1982 it has been home to the Schaubühne company, founded in 1970 by Peter Stein and a group of actors, which gained international fame and became one of Germany's most prestigious theatres. The building was damaged in the Second World War and rebuilt; between 1978 and 1981 its interior was completely transformed into a theatre hall with adjustable spaces and no separation between audience and actors. Under the direction of Thomas Ostermeier since 1999, the theatre maintains a modern orientation with interpretations of classic and contemporary works, and its productions have toured internationally. It has also hosted the political debate series Streitraum since 2000.
