Lietzensee

The Lietzensee is an urban lake in the Charlottenburg district, surrounded by a historic 10.1-hectare park designed by garden director Erwin Barth between 1918 and 1920. Protected as a garden heritage site, the park retains architectural features such as the Great Cascade (1912/1913) at its southern end and the Little Cascade on the north-west shore, as well as the Parkwächterhaus of 1925/1926. Its gardens contain several sculptures and monuments, including the memorial to the fallen of the Queen Elisabeth Guard Regiment (1925) and the 'Sandalenbindender Knabe' (Boy Fastening His Sandal, 1909). The lake has been divided by a dam since 1904, and its western shore has footpaths forming a circuit of nearly 5 km, popular with runners. The park offers large green spaces, liegewiesen (lawns for lying out), several playgrounds and a small football pitch. On the terrace by the lake there is a beer garden and small cafés. Swimming in the lake is neither permitted nor possible, due to water quality and the lack of shallow shores.
