Roman Bridge (Arab Bridge)
It crosses the Guadalevín in the lower part of the gorge, at the foot of the old town, and is the lowest of the bridges spanning the Tajo. It is known as the Roman Bridge and also as the Arab Bridge: it is thought to have been built on the foundations of an earlier Roman structure and rebuilt in Muslim times. It should not be confused with the Puente Viejo, which lies upstream, or with the Puente Nuevo. It stands next to the Arab Baths complex, in the San Miguel quarter, the old Islamic suburb. River floods forced it to be rebuilt several times. It fell out of use when the expansion of the Mercadillo in the 16th century demanded a better route to the Ciudad and, later, when the bridge above it was built. Today it is viewed from the path that goes down to the river, with the bed of the Guadalevín below and the walls of the Tajo closing in above.
