Biblioteca Marciana
The Biblioteca Marciana occupies the building that Jacopo Sansovino began in 1537 opposite the Doge's Palace, in St Mark's Square. A vault collapse in 1545 halted the works, and Vincenzo Scamozzi finished the last sections between 1582 and 1588 and placed the coronation statues. Its origin lies in the donation of Cardinal Bessarion, who in 1468 gave Venice 482 Greek and 264 Latin codices on condition that a public library be created. The monumental rooms are visited with the St Mark's Square Museums ticket and are reached through the Napoleonic Wing of the Museo Correr. In the vestibule the octagonal ceiling by Titian, from around 1560, stands out. The reading room has a ceiling with 21 tondi by various painters, three of them by Veronese.
