Caffè Florian

CultureVisit: ~45 min

Caffè Florian opened on 29 December 1720 in St Mark's Square under the name 'Alla Venezia Trionfante'; it later took the name of its owner, Floriano Francesconi. By 1750 it already had four rooms, and in 1796 the State Inquisitors closed it because of its French Jacobin clientele; it reopened in 1797 as Florian. During the revolution of 1848 the Senate Room served as a meeting point for patriots and the premises operated as a hospital. Lodovico Cadorin redecorated it in 1858. Its rooms each have their own decoration: the Senate Room, by Giacomo Casa; the Chinese and Oriental rooms, by Antonio Pascuti; the Hall of Illustrious Men, from 1872, with ten portraits of Venetians such as Goldoni, Titian and Palladio, by Giulio Carlini; the Hall of the Seasons, from 1891, with the four seasons by Vincenzo Rota; and the Liberty Room, from 1920, with hand-painted mirrors.
