Convent of Santa Isabel la Real
A 16th-century convent in the Albaicín quarter, which according to tradition Queen Isabella founded as a retreat for women of distinction. In 1507 Doña Luisa Torres arrived from Córdoba with twenty nuns to establish it. It is a Site of Cultural Interest. A semi-public forecourt (compás) gives access to the church and, through an entrance hall, to the convent's square courtyard, with seven arches on each side. The gallery preserves fine Mudéjar coffered ceilings on both floors. The church has a single nave, with a Mudéjar timber roof and a Gothic chapel; the doorway is attributed to Enrique Egas and the chapel to Pedro de la Calle. The slender tower is decorated with Moorish tiles. The church houses the processional floats of the Brotherhood of the Rosary. It is still home to a religious community, so the interior cannot be explored freely.
