Church of San Benito
The church of San Benito is a 16th-century Gothic church in the historic centre of Salamanca, a World Heritage Site. Its south façade, in the Flemish Gothic style, is protected by a small roof and has a doorway with ogee arches housing the Annunciation, as well as buttresses decorated with the coats of arms of the Fonseca, Ulloa, Maldonado and Acevedo families. Inside, a single nave is covered with star vaults whose ribs rest on corbels, and it houses Gothic and Renaissance tombs of the Maldonado family. The high altarpiece, Neoclassical and in stone, was made by Eustaquio Román in 1783 and includes a Calvary of around 1510 attributed to Gil de Ronza, moved from the University chapel. The church is still open for worship and is the only one in the diocese of Salamanca where the Tridentine Mass is celebrated; since 2019 it has been the canonical seat of the Seraphic Brotherhood of the Cristo de la Agonía.
